Frequently Asked Questions
I can't make it to the auditions because we'll be out of town on vacation/at a family graduations, etc, can I still audition? Yes, if you can make arrangements for a time that is convenient for me, I will be happy to try and work with you.
I would have to miss one week of rehearsals because of our annual family vacation, is that okay? Yes, as long as its not during dress rehearsal week. July 19th - the performances, which end on August 1st. You can miss up to three practices. Most people will only practice twice a week.
I work until ________, when will practices be? *I handle this a bit differently than most. On the audition form, you will be asked which blocks of time you are available. When casting, I try to group people in part by not only which part they'd be best at, but also when they are available. Sometimes I will have 7 hours of practices with 4 different groups/scenes throughout the day. Other times, everyone ends up scheduled during the evenings. It completely depends on the cast's availability.
I would like to help out with costumes/backstage/behind the scenes, etc. Can I help? Absolutely. I generally fill all backstage/behind the scenes roles with students, ages 13 - 18. If you have a knack for behind the scenes work, just let me know!
I've never been in a play before, should I try out? Absolutely!! I love working with kids who've never been on stage before. It is a priveledge that I greatly enjoy! I have more fun working with the 'newbies' because they don't already 'know it all':) Just kidding, but honestly, please do try out!
WAIT! How do I prepare for an audition? What are you looking for? 1st: Preparing for an audition. Practice enunciating (speaking clearly) and speaking loudly without yelling. Read aloud from books with different characters. FInd the types of characters that you are really good at and enjoy (ie: are you better at being mean or silly, happy or sad, dumb or smart?) Have your friend or parent stand at the bottom of the stairs or outside of your room and see if you can project loud enough for them to still be able to hear you. This is the best thing you can do!!
2nd: If you are going to audition for a singing part, practice a song with some range or emotion in it, so we can see not only how well you can sing, but how expressive you are. You are much more likely to be cast in a singing role if you can be expressive while you sing!
We are looking for kids who take direction well. I don't cast 'hot shots' who think they know it all. I also don't cast children who can't behave. If you can't follow directions, refrain from fighting, etc during auditions, I am not likely to cast you, regardless of your talent.
I am looking for kids who are willing to try. If I suddenly ask you to sing "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" or do something silly that a character in the play might do, and you won't do it... yeah, you're less likely to be cast. Be willing to be spontaneous and have FUN!
Any questions? Just ask!
